Because mobile phones have become a big part of every ones lives many people will go to great lengths to keep them active. Some will go without insurance for their car, not pay their rent or utilities and even go without food. Most consumer cellular carriers have free texting and calls but you pay high monthly rates and if you happen to go over your data limit look out. There are some companies that have a pay as you go plan but it is a hassle to activate them (I have experience with this especially if you have your own phone) and if you run out of time in the middle of a call what a pain in the butt.
Our family got one of those family plans from a major carrier with unlimited talk, text and a small amount of data every month. They had a great offer of free phones at the time and low monthly payments that turned out to be way more than originally quoted. The problem was we signed a 2 year contract and could not get out of it without mortgaging the farm to pay the penalty for breaking the contract.
